Following the series of articles featuring Gard Services' staff, this issue of Gard News details the individual staff employed in Gard's offices in Sweden, Hong Kong and Japan.
Gard Services (Sweden) AB
Gard Services (Sweden) AB, a subsidiary of Gard Services AS, was established in 1996 and operates from premises in Gothenburg. The company serves as a full service office responsible for Gard Services' market activities in Sweden, claims handling and legal advice to Swedish shipowners and charterers entered with Gard. The office further serves as Gard Services' correspondent in Sweden, which ordinarily involves assistance in P&I-related matters, but which may also include service and assistance to Gard Marine and Gard Energy.
Thomas is a qualified Swedish lawyer, with an LLM from the University of Lund and a degree from the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law in Oslo. During 1992 Thomas served at a Swedish District Court followed by four years in private practice (commercial law and litigation), from 1993 until he joined Gard in 1997. At Gard Thomas initially handled legal matters, including FD&D disputes and P&I claims. Since 1999 he holds the position of Managing Director of Gard Services (Sweden) AB.
Maria obtained her Swedish law degree in 1985 at the University of Lund, followed by two and a half years of service at a District Court. In 1988 she started working in the insurance department of Stena in Gothenburg where she was responsible for P&I claims handling and marine insurance-related matters. After spending some years abroad Maria joined Gard as a Claims Adjuster in 1997. Presently she handles P&I claims, provides legal advice to members and is involved in marketing.
Jörgen is a qualified Swedish lawyer who joined Gard as a Claims Adjuster in December 1998. He holds two LLM degrees, one from the University of Lund and one from the University of Southampton, as well as a degree from the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law in Oslo. At Gard Jörgen deals with P&I claims and provides legal advice to members. Jörgen is also involved in marketing.
Malena, who previously worked at an international trading house, joined Gard in 1999. In her role as office assistant she provides daily back-office support and handles the firm's bookkeeping and accounts. Malena also handles the fixed-premium P&I business for smaller Swedish passenger ferries. She is currently on maternity leave and is due to return to duty in mid-2002.
Gard Services (HK) Ltd
Gard Services (HK) Ltd, formerly Gard Asia (HK) Ltd, was established in 1997 as a service centre in the Far East for Gard P&I members. The company formally commenced operations on 20th February 1998. In July 2000 ownership was transferred and the company is now a subsidiary of Gard Services AS, involved in all its activities. The office also serves as Gard Services' correspondent in Hong Kong. With the exception of L. C. Yuen, all the staff was previously employed by J. A. Lister & Co. Ltd, who acted as Hong Kong correspondent of Gard P&I until 20th February 1998.
Julian is the General Manager of the office. He has been in the P&I industry for over 25 years and was formerly the principal of Gard's correspondents in Hong Kong, where he has resided since 1979.
Michelle is a BSSc, having graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She has 16 years' experience in P&I and is fluent in Mandarin (Cantonese is the dialect used in Hong Kong). Michelle handles all types of claims, with particular emphasis on cargo claims for Taiwanese members and claims arising in Mainland China.
L. C. Yuen
L. C. joined Gard Services in 1999. He was educated at the Chinese University of Hong Kong where he read Economics and Business Administration. In 1977, after having been employed in the claims and insurance department of a shipowning company for three years, he joined the Hong Kong office of A. Bilbrough & Co. Ltd, the managers of the London Club, as a Claims Executive and remained with them until he joined Gard Services. L. C. handles all types of P&I claims, with emphasis on dry cargo claims.
Limy has worked for Gard Services since February 1998. Before joining J. A. Lister & Co. Ltd in 1987 she worked for a local surveying company. She handles the office accounts, administration and assists with the secretarial work.
Louise has worked for Gard Services since February 1998. Before joining J. A. Lister & Co. Ltd in August 1995 she worked as a secretary for a local finance company. She provides secretarial support for the Claims Adjusters.
Jhoie is from the Philippines and has resided in Hong Kong since 1984. She has worked for Gard Services since 1998, having joined J. A. Lister & Co. Ltd in 1992 as a secretary. She provides secretarial support for the General Manager and the Claims Adjusters.
Gard P&I Japan and Far East
In August 1991 the Japanese Ministry of Finance granted Assuranceforeningen Gard a licence to insure Japanese flag vessels. The granting of a licence enabled the Club to provide a P&I alternative to all sections of the shipping industry of one of the world's most important markets. In order to provide the best possible service to this market, the Club opened an office in Tokyo during the autumn of 1991: Gard P&I Japan and Far East. Today the office also serves as correspondent for Gard Services in the Tokyo area.
Hideo joined Gard in November 1991, when Gard P&I Japan and Far East first opened. He graduated from the Tokyo Merchant Marine Academy in 1972 and, after spending some years on board Japanese vessels as deck officer, he worked at the offices of several Japanese shipping companies. Hideo handles all types of claims and also works with underwriting.
Toyoo also joined Gard in 1991 when Gard P&I Japan and Far East first opened. After graduating from the Tokyo Merchant Marine Academy he served as deck officer on board vessels for two years, then worked at the insurance department of a Japanese shipping company. After that Toyoo worked for Aall and Co., Tokyo, who were Gard's correspondents at the time. Presently Toyoo handles all types of claims, working also with underwriting and general affairs of the office.
Hiroko joined Gard Japan in 1992. She previously worked for a Japanese textile company. Hiroko handles secretarial tasks, crew claims and the office accounts.
