Representatives from the Tokyo office of Assuranceforeningen Gard and the Hong Kong office of Gard Services have recently attended a naming ceremony in Japan.

Mr Toyoo Mohri of Gard P&I Japan and Far East, Tokyo and Mr Julian Lister of Gard Services (HK) Ltd were privileged to be invited by the vessels’ London agents, Levant Maritime Company Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Navios Corporation, to attend the naming ceremony of the ultra Handymax bulk carriers NISSOS HIOS and NISSOS KYPROS at the Sanoyas Hishino Meisho Corporation, Mizushima Works and Shipyard, Japan, on 27th February 2003.

The owners, already operating a very modern fleet of seven Handymax bulkers, have achieved significant improvements for these vessels. An increase in cubic capacity to almost 70,000m3 has been attained. Electro hydraulic cranes (35 MT) and grabs (13m3 ) of increased capacity have been installed. Unique steel hot coil loading capability has been achieved. An improved propulsion package has also been installed to ensure that performance competitiveness is maintained. The vessels’ managers are both members of Gard P&I and clients of Gard Marine.
