Piping arrangement on tankers can be complex and it maybe difficult for crew to identify the right valve owing to ‘difficult to see’, ‘wrong’ or ‘no’ markings on them. Gard’s case study on cargo contamination during tank cleaning, covers an incident that lead to the cargo being contaminated during tank cleaning due to improper line markings. Our focus in the case study is on the necessity of proper markings and stenciling on tankers to prevent human error during operations.
