For some time Gard has been planning to extend its presence in Japan in order to increase the level of service provided to the market and current Members and clients. As Gard already has a licence to operate in Japan, additional offices can be established without any further regulatory involvement.
A significant number of shipowners operate from the west of Japan, so Gard has decided to open an office in this region, to learn about local needs and decide on resources to meet them going forward. Imabari has a very large shipping community and is therefore ideally suited as the location of the new office, which opened for business on 26th November 2012.
The Imabari office will initially be a representative office manned by staff from Gard’s Tokyo office, with Fernando Shuhei Iida, Masamichi Yokoyama and Toshiyuki Kawana manning the office in rotation.
The most important thing for a P&I Club is to have a close relationship with Members. By having a base in Imabari Gard will be able to get together with local Members and help them in their day-to-day management of risk and its consequences.
