The coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) has shocked the world with millions of infections and lives lost. The shipping industry has kept world trade moving throughout the pandemic, though at high cost. Crew have been adversely affected by infections, illness and deaths from both the coronavirus itself as well as its impact; and they are at the centre of a humanitarian crew crisis, with many unable to be repatriated after expiration of their employment contracts. Incidents and claims relating to people are one of the most frequently occurring types of maritime claim. Liability may arise when crew members are injured or sick; when stevedores get injured during cargo operations, when passengers are delayed; when stowaways are found on board; and with search and rescue operations or refugees saved at sea. These types of claim usually have a humanitarian element in addition to the operational and financial sides. Preventive measures are important, but it is also vital to focus on best practice should an incident occur.
