Erik Werenskiolds avgjørelse om å bli kunstner ble støttet av hans velstående familie, og i 1875 reiste den 20 år gamle Werenskiold til München for å studere kunst. Allerede i Münchentiden fikk han en forespørsel fra Peter Chr. Asbjørnsen om han kunne tenke seg å bidra med illustrasjoner til Asbjørnsen & Moes samling av norske folkeeventyr. Eventyrillustrasjonene og hans senere illustrasjoner til Snorres kongesagaer er hans mest kjente og folkekjære verk.

Som maler utviklet Werenskiold seg til en dyktig realist og friluftsmaler. Hovedverket En bondebegravelse (1883-1885)i Nasjonalmuseet viser hvordan han kombinerte sin interesse for folkelivsskildring med en naturalistisk motivoppfatning. Senere utviklet han sin kunst i retning en mer forenklet og stilisert uttrykksform, med vekt på nasjonale motiver.

Erik Werenskiold har hatt stor betydning i norsk kunst- og kulturliv. Han ble sentral i Lysakerkretsen, en gruppe kunstnere som gjennom sitt nasjonale engasjement fikk stor innflytelse.

Gards maleri er ikke datert, men er trolig fra en senere periode i Werenskiolds kunstneriske produksjon. De små trollaktige vesnene fyller billedflaten og bildet oser av humor og skaperglede. Motivene fra norsk folketro sto kunstneren nær og han arbeidet med dem gjennom hele sin karriere.

When Erik Werenskiold decided to become an artist, the decision was supported by his prosperous family, and in 1875 the 20-year-old Werenskiold arrived in Munich to study art. During his time in Munich, he was approached by Peter Chr. Asbjørnsen and asked if he would consider contributing illustrations to the forthcoming edition of Asbjørnsen & Moe’s Norwegian Fairytales. These illustrations as well as the later illustrations of the Viking Sagas by Snorre Sturlasson have become much loved classics.

As a painter, Werenskiold became an accomplished Realist and plein air painter. His masterpiece A Peasant Burial in the National Museum in Oslo combines his interest in genre painting with his naturalistic approach. He later developed his style towards a more stylized expression with a focus on national subjects.

Erik Werenskiold has been very important to Norwegian art and he was a central figure in the so called “Lysakerkretsen”, a group of Norwegian artists who were focused on the national ideas and who became very influential.

This fascinating work from the Gard Collection has not been dated but is probably from a later period in his production. The small troll-like creatures fill the surface of the painting and the picture is infused with creative joy and a sense of humour. Motifs from Norwegian folklore was dear to Werenskiold’s heart and central to his work during his entire career as an artist.
