Marine Pollution

Pollution and ocean acidification are threats to ocean resources. Our focus is to prevent and minimise the impact of marine pollution to make the oceans cleaner and safer.

Sustainable Ship Recycling

Approximately 95% of a ship's weight consists of non-hazardous steel that can be reused. Recycling is considered the most sustainable way to retire a ship but it is vital to ensure this process is safe and done in environmental manner. Ships may contain harmful substances like PCBs, asbestos, and oil, as well as paint with lead, mercury, zinc, arsenic, and chromium, which are all pollutants and risky for the health of workers involved in ship recycling. In line with our commitment to sustainability, Gard follows the Hong Kong Convention and EU regulations. Additionally, we are part of the Sustainable Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative, which aims to promote responsible ship recycling practices through a voluntary, market-driven approach.
