The cause of the maritime incident that took place in the vicinity of the anchorages off Fujairah, UAE on 12 May 2019 has not been confirmed by the local authorities as investigations are ongoing.
According to the US Maritime Administration (MARAD), “a maritime incident has been reported in the vicinity of the anchorages off Fujairah, UAE on 12 May 2019”. In its alert No.: 2019-002A, MARAD states that “the nature of the event is reported to be attacks or sabotage on one or more vessels”. However, at the time of writing, the cause of the incident has not been confirmed by the local authorities who are in process of conducting their investigations.
Gard’s local correspondents in the UAE reports that, as of 14 May 2019, the port of Fujairah is open and operating as normal. However, as available information about the incident and its consequences remains sparse, the situation may be subject to change and ships are advised to exercise caution in the Fujairah area. Ship Masters should stay in close contact with local port authorities/ship’s agent to obtain the most up to date and reliable information available at any given time. Some Flag Administrations may require a heightened security level for Fujairah port, meaning that ships need to implement additional protective measures in accordance with the formal Ship Security Plan (SSP).
