2017/18 has been a year of focused introspection within the Group, including a root and branch review of the ways in which the Group delivers benefits for shipowners through its claims pooling arrangements and through the sharing of the unparalleled underwriting, technical and legal knowledge and expertise which resides within the managements of the Group clubs.
Gard announced the 2018 winners of the Claes Isacson Scholarship following its Annual General Meeting in Arendal on Friday, 7 September. The Scholarship winner for this year is Robert Michael Veal from the United Kingdom. He is a PhD student at the University of Southampton, specialising in the legal issues arising from the use of marine autonomous systems.
In 1992 a small group of Lloyd's underwriters established the Lloyd's of London Officer Cadet Scholarship as a charity to support training of seafaring officers and improved standards. The scheme was renamed the Maritime London Officer Cadet Scholarship (MLOCS) in 2002, to reflect sponsorship and donations made by the wider maritime services industry in the City of London.
Today, on World Oceans Day, the UN Action Platform for Sustainable Ocean Business, a cooperation between business, governments, academia and NGOs, is launched at a meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The Annual General Meeting of Gard P. & I. (Bermuda) Ltd. will be held on Thursday, 21 June 2018 at the offices of its Manager, Lingard Limited. This meeting is a requirement under Bermuda law and is a formality only. The Club's Members are not required to be present in person at the meeting.
Gard has in place a banking arrangement whereby Gard in certain circumstances covers the cost of payments, including those incurred by the beneficiary’s bank. This has allowed payments to be received in full by the beneficiary, without deduction of fees.

Gard has been a partner of the World Maritime University (WMU) since 2011. Each year, one student is offered a sponsorship, the Gard Fellowship, which covers the cost of one year of higher education within the marine industry.
Gard is the largest member of the International Group of P&I Clubs. The International Group currently has 13 member clubs which collectively provide liability insurance for more than 90 per cent of the world’s ocean-going tonnage and more than 95 per cent of the world’s ocean going tankers.
