Gard Alert: Focused Inspection Campaign - Australia - Container securing equipment - SOLAS Chapter VI Regulation 5
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) will be conducting a three month Focused Inspection Campaign (FIC) primarily focusing on container securing equipment, both fixed and portable. The FIC will be conducted on all vessels to which the Navigation Act 1912 applies.
The campaign will run from 1 February 2010 to 30 April 2010.
The equipment inspected will include items such as twist locks, lashing bars and wires, lashing anchors and securing points, etc.
Where deficiencies are found during the focused inspection, the Master will be required to carry out all necessary rectification works. Should the deficiencies found be of a more serious nature, the surveyor may detain the vessel under the Navigation Act.
The ship's approved cargo securing manual contains information on how to stow and secure containers, and on any strength or stack weight limitation. Gard recommends that all members and clients check the equipment beforehand to verify whether it complies with the specifications as set out in the manual and if need be contact the manufacturer/supplier of the equipment to avoid deficiencies.
